Writing: Becoming an Author

This WebQuest is designed to guide students through the process of writing a story using the tools of the Internet. The student will learn the guidelines of the writing process from pre-writing to publishing and what are the basic elements of a story. It will also give practice in developing the different story elements of plot, characters, setting and narrative voice. Students will learn about the different kinds of literature than can be written from a play to a story or fiction and non-fiction. 

Students will learn to work together to research information and jointly create a story as a team.  The student will also learn how each team members input and effort into assigned tasks is vital. This length of the WebQuest can vary, it is intended for five to ten days, but can be extended to a month if used in conjunction with a writing unit. Students should be able to exhibit knowledge in the use of technology in doing research using Internet resources and basic use of a word processing tool to enhance the learning process.

Curriculum Standards from the Mississippi Language Arts Framework: 

Competency # 4. Read, listen to, and view multimedia sources to select and use information. (R, W, S, L, V)

                         b. Compose a variety of oral, visual, and written presentations from information gathered.

     Competency # 1. Communicating for a variety of purposes through different forms of writing using
                                  the processes of reading, writing, listening, and viewing for an expanding audience .

Competency  # 1.a. Accomplish a writing process through planning, drafting, revising, editing  publishing, an                                    self-reflecting on written communications such as drama, biographies,  creative writing, etc.

This WebQuest can be used for students with the basic knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling. It is intended to further expand the writing capabilities of the student to create stories with the possibility of becoming writers, not just an assignment.
