Part 3: Completing the Project

Add buttons to navigate through the cards

Buttons are needed to navigate through the stack. You can wait until you have finished adding

all the cards or add buttons as each card is created. Until buttons are added the student can navigate through the stack by using the Move menu (back, next, previous, first, last, or

jump to card #)

As the stack is being worked on the student can navigate to each card by using the Move Menu or keyboard shortcuts (CTRL and < or >). To use the keyboard shortcuts, click on the card and click and hold down the CTRL button while using the < to browse backwards and the > to go forward through the cards in the stack. If you checked Show card number on title card under Preferences, then you can tell what card you are on.
To add a button, go to Objects>Add a Button. The Button Appearance box will appear to allow selection of button type, name or icon, button background color, and button text color.

Select the button type. You can type in a name for the button and click Show Name or select an icon (graphic image). Check Show Icon to make sure the icon will show. Usually it is best to use either the name or an icon.

Below are examples of a button with a name and a button using an icon to indicate direction.

Wrapping up the Stack

Once all the cards have been connected, a conclusion card should be added. This card should include thanks to anyone helping create the card, resources used in making the stack, and an exit or quit button

A cool thing to use to display the end credits is to use the NBA Roll Credits. To use Roll credits a text object/box needs to be added. Type in list of who to thank, who created the stack, what resources that were used to create the stack, etc. Double-click or right click on the text box and select ACTIONS. Then click on New Button Actions.

Once the New Button Action dialog box appears, select Roll Credits from the list. Be sure to name the text object/box that will be activated (e.g. credits). Put the name of the text box in the NAME field. Select the scrolling speed, scroll per line or per pixels, and the scroll direction. Test your selections out. Change if you need to make the text scroll faster or slower.

Adding an Exit button

The stack should always have someway to exit or close the stack. A good way to do this is to insert a button and find an appropriate icon.

Double-click or right-click on the button. Go to ACTIONS. Select New Button Actions. Pick QUIT from the NBA list and then click on "Use this NBA". Click ok to finish.
Always test out the actions you added to the card. Click on the browse tool (the hand) and go through the stack. Make sure everything works or goes where intended. Make sure the buttons go to the right card. Check if hyperlinks, path animation, and videos work right.
Publish Stack to the Web

These stacks can be displayed on the Web. If you do so be sure not to give last names or addresses of the students. To do this go to Extras>ExportWebpg. If your stack is complete with working buttons, the viewer can navigate through the entire stack. Be sure to export the card you want to start with to the Web. Then the viewer can click on each button to go to all the other cards in the stack. This Extras feature creates a HTML page to upload to the Internet.

About Me Stack Web page. The stack and the HTML page must be saved in the same folder!

If the stack does not show up it may be a problem with compatibility with the browser being used to view the page. Try it!

The finished project could look like this:

Neva's About Me Stack

Your students should always try to organize the content they intend to use in their project. This includes images and word documents that have pre-made with text to include on each card. The more advanced planning that is done, the better the project will be.

Now have your students create a project. Start with this beginning stack. The stack dimensions are 512x384 and the first card is already created. Change the stack dimensions if needed. Add a background color or import a ready-made background. Add more cards and add the content. Don't forget to have the students plan what is going to be put into the stack before they get started. That means gathering images, videos, writing the textual information, and planning what images will go with what text.
Hope you have fun using HyperStudio in your class!!
