Part 1: Create a Lesson

A. Decide on Subject Area/Topic

The first thing you need to do is to decide on what subject area you need to create a lesson on.

Lessons can be created on any subject area or topic.

Some subject area topics include:

  • Geography
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Language Arts
  • Grammar
  • History

Example Stacks
Each stack is under a different subject area catagory. View the stack to see how each stack to see how a lesson can be constructed for that subject area or topic.

B. Creating Content Based on Age/Grade Level
Now that you have looked at some stacks that were created under different subject/topic areas, you can begin to think about what kind of lesson that can be created. When creating the lesson you need to keep in mind what age appropriate content will be used. This includes what graphics will be used and how you state the the instruction or information for the text. Just keep in mind who you are creating the lesson for and make sure the information or instructions are easy to understand for those student that will be using the lesson. .
Below are 3 phrases that is matched to a question. Are they appropriately matched?
  • grade 1-2
  • My dog is very smart. I play with him every day.
  • 2nd-3rd
  • D for Dog
  • pre-school or kindergarten
  • There are many different types of dogs. Some dogs are considered hunters. Other dogs are bred just to be seeing-eye dogs. Many dogs are just pets. There are also dogs that vary in size and the type of coat or hair they have.

Which of the 3 responses is not matched to the appropriate grade/age level? Can you tell?

Yes, it is the last one. That much text is better for those students with a better reading level, although you need to keep in mind that reading levels (or levels of any skill such as math varies per student. Age and grade level skills are not necessarily the same).

This gives you an idea of creating content that is appropriate for the age or grade level you are creating the lesson for, so remember that it is important that you keep the content easy to understand for your students. Keep in mind reading and comprehension levels of those that will be viewing the lesson.
Practice creating your own content. Each section of the practice stack will be for a different age level. Try to complete the section with content that matches that age/grade level. Fhe content will be on differenet subject areas.

You can review needed information about using HyperStudio by going to The HyperStudio Tuorial for Educators. Unit 1 covers basic information about the toolbar menu titles. Unit 2 has the basics on creating a stack and incorporating multimedia elements such as text, graphics, sound, video, and animation. Unit 3 goes over New Button Actions, and Unit 4 has a section on creating a quiz. Go to the tutorial.
