Lesson 1Lesson TwoLesson 3

Using GeoCities to Build Your Web Site

Lesson2

Using a template to create your class web site

As mentioned in the last lesson, once you have uploaded the files you want you are ready to position them on the template or blank page. The advantage of using a template is that it already has text boxes and images on the page which will help you see how the page can be laid out. You can put in different text and images, positioning them where you would like if you want to change the layout.

personal page templateThis is a template that I used to make a personal page to link to my class page. You can change the image and add text to the sections you choose to put on your page, like hobbies, interests, events, etc.

Here is an example of one of the templates you can use for your class web site. You can have a section for communication with the students and parents, lessons or projects available, resource or favorite links, and upcoming events or recent activites that your students have been involved in as well as accomplishments or student highlighted works (stories, poems, artwork, etc.). Only put up the first name with their work, especially if access to the site is not password protected.

You can edit the different areas of the page to suit your purposes, putting in your own class materials. A welcome greeting is one possible section. You can also put in a picture of your class, although you should be mindful of using students names, especially their last names due to the increasing problem of Internet safety.

Here is another template; I changed the title as you can do for your page. Put your in your favorite links, email address for communication between students, teachers and parents. You can also put in links that can be used for assignments or just fun sites that can be good for kids, like Yahooligans, MY DINOSAUR PAGE, KIDScom and Simithsonian.com from a fellow teacher when our principal tried to get a little technology going in our school which you can visit at http://www.hpsd.k12.ms.us/woodley/jgreen/default.htm.

You will need to save your page you have been working on. You will see this page come up and you name the page if you have not done so already. You will also see a list of all your pages here.

save page step

Then it will ask you if you want to view the page in your default browser, like Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, etc.

save and view page

You can still go back and make changes if you see that something does not look just like you want it or if it does not show up like you thought it would. Don't forget to save the page before you close out your session at Geocities. It is also a good idea to save often in case your session times out on the Internet.
