Lesson One Lesson Two Lesson Three

Using GeoCities to Build Your Web Site

Lesson One

One good way to start your own class or personal web page is to go to http://geocities.yahoo.com. They have space you can sign up for that is free. The first thing you need to do is sign up for new service.

If you are new at the web thing, you can use Page Builder. Page Builder uses the what you see is what you get philosophy. You can use a template to edit the information that is there with your own or you can start with a blank page. Once you have signed up for your space, you can use PageWizard or Page Builder to create your class web site.

When you launch Page Builder, you will see this box loading Page Builder.

When the Page Builder finishes loading you will be able to choose a template to begin your work.

Page Wizard also gives you a choice to choose from different templates or a blank page. There are templates with various themes. You can choose from some of these:

After you have chosen a layout that you like, you can begin to edit the information that is on the template with your own material. One thing you may want to include is a class picture. You would need to carefully guard your students identities. Pick a title for your page. You may only want to list the class name, like My First Grade Class, Our Class, or the name of the teacher ____'s Class. Other parts of you class web site may include:

  • Lessons
  • Assignments
  • Resource links
  • Announcements/Events
  • Email link to the teacher for students and parents.

The next step is to manage your files. You can make folders for images or content information you want to include. You must upload these files to be able to put then on your web page.

You will see sections that show the name of the file

The last modified date

And the size of the file.

Your main page you are working should be called index.html or index.htm.

Click on the button-Upload Files to select images or documents from your computer that you want on your site. You can put them into the folders you created.

Certain files work best on the web, like jpeg, and gif. You can specify the type of files you want to upload

You may upload an image like this

Once you have uploaded the files you want you are ready to position them on the template or blank page. The advantage of using a template is that it already has text boxes and images on the page which will help you see how the page can be laid out. You can put in different text and images, positioning them where you would like if you want to change the layout. You will see this warning at the bottom of the page of files. It is always a good idea to save your work at all times, especially after you have added anything new.

You will also see this on your page of files. If you know about HTML codes and how they work, you can edit your page from here, but it will affect using the Page Wizard later. Here is how the page will look if you decide to edit your page using the HTML Editor. You will see this warning which will give you the opportunity to use page builder instead.

You will learn more about using a sample template to edit what is there with your own material and some different categories you may want to include.
