Hello. My name is Neva Byers Odom.

This site is an accumulation of my technology works created during my time as a graduate student at The University of Southern Mississippi as I pursued a Masters in Instructional Technology. You can access the different Web sites and Web-based instructional units that I have created during my time as a graduate student at The University of Southern Mississippi which is located in the HUB city of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. USM is the home of the Golden Eagles and the PRIDE Marching Band.

Introduction

As I progressed through the different classes of the Master's program for Instructional Technology, I had to created different technology-based projects. During my first semester I created a personal Web site and my first WebQuest (IT 648). I also learned how to use a multimedia authoring program called HyperStudio in IT 569. In IT 650 I learned how to use Web CT to create distance learning courses. Taking IT 644 taught me how to use other multimedia software programs such as ULead 360, PhotoStory 3, Camtasia, SnagIT, ToolBook, and Video Studio 7. Other skills included learning about Flash, PhotoShop, Fireworks, Illustrator, and program planning for adults.

Below is a description of the Instructional Technology (IT) or Adult Education (ADE) classes and what was created in each class.

Personal Web Site

I created this Web site during my first semester at USM. The class is called, IT 648, Telecommunications in Education, which examines hardware, software, implementation, and utilization of telecommunication technology as it applies to education. We had to create a personal Web site that included personal page, a resume/vita page, and at least one outside link. That year we also had to create a WebQuest.

My WebQuests

I developed two different WebQuests. One was in IT 610 and the other was in IT 648.

IT 610, Sociological Perspectives in Technology, examines the equitable and ethical implications of instructional technology in various learning environments. My WebQuest for this class had to involve a quest to explore how teachers could use technology to help students learn while "bridging the digital divide." This WebQuest is entitled "Think TECH! A WebQuest for Educators"

I also created a WebQuest for my Web-based instruction class (IT 648. This WebQuest was entitled "Writing, Becoming an Author."

IT 569 Mulitmedia Program

IT 569 is an introduction to multimedia concepts, design, and instructional applications. In this class we created instructional materials and projects using HyperStudio, a card-based software program that incorporates the multimedia elements of text, graphics, sound, video, and animation, You can also hyperlink any image or text to the World Wide Web for further exploration of any topic.

IT 644 Mulitmedia Program

IT 644 is the advanced course in the development and use of interactive, animated hypermedia products for use in instructional design projects, presentations, and multimedia events. In this class we learned how to use various software such as Camtasia to create instructional videos, editing sound clips using Sound Forge, putting together digital video clips using Video Studio, and creating a instructional unit using Toolbook. The videos for how to use a PDA (Personal Desk Assistant) were created using Camtasia. These can be accessed on the side menu at the top left-hand menu on this page.

IT 650 Distance Learning

This class gave a survey of distance learning models, theoretical frameworks, historical development and practical applications. We learned all about various learning theories and how they affect your teaching style and your students learning styles. One assignment was to create your own distance learning class using Web CT.

IT 755 Web-Based Instruction

You will examine the World Wide Web as a means for delivering instruction as well as design and develop a Web-based course. I designed a course on how to use HyperStudio and develop a class Web site. VIew this instructional unit: Technology in Education. We utilized the software program Dreamweaver to develop this Web-based unit.

IT 709 Administration of Instructional Technologies

Apply administrative practices and principles to implement effective instructional technology learning environments.

One thing we had to do in this class was to design our own technology lab. My lab is set up as I would design my classroom, with a computer section to work on projects, video editing area, study/library area, and laptop computers that can be at every student desk. A wireless network would be in place connecting to a interactive board in the front of the room.. A white board and other bulletin boards would also be in place.

IT 640 Interactive Instructional Media

Learn to develop interactive instructional media and discuss design principles related to teaching and learning. You will learn Flash and how to edit images/pictures using Abobe Fireworks and Fhotoshop.

In this class we had to use Photoshop to take various images and merge them together to form a new image. We also had to design a instructional page using Fireworks to incorporate "hotspots" hyperlinking to unit pages. Finally, we had to create an instructional unit using Flash. We put all this projects together in an electronic portfolio using which ever multimedia element we wanted. I elected to use a Web-based e-portfolio using Dreamweaver.

ADE 607 Adult Program Planning

This adult education class involved a big project where we had to create a program plan for teaching some aspect to adults. This could be whatever interest you had. My plan was to provide training and following instruction for teachers to learn a specific software. This plan could be adapted for various technology-based skills to help teachers learn the skill in a workshop or intensive training session, then throughout the year, be provided training in the classroom setting and other spot training sessions to learn how to implement the use of the software into their teaching practices.
